Hi, and welcome to www.a-snails-pace.co.uk.

A group of us has set this site up for three main reasons:

·      Raise money for charity – namely Jane’s Appeal

·      Raise awareness for Autism, Asperger Syndrome and our local Autism support group

·      And, of course, to massage our egos by trying to make out we’re all roughy, toughy, outdoor types.

This year, a group of us hopes to swim the English Channel as a relay team to raise money for Jane’s Appeal.

Jane’s Appeal is a charity started by the late Jane Tomlinson.  Jane was diagnosed with cancer in 2000 and was given six months to live.  She was a truly remarkable lady, refusing to give up easily, and over the next seven years she went on to conquer enormous physical challenges: running marathons (26 miles), competing in Ironman challenges (a 2.4-mile swim, then a 112-mile bike ride, followed by running a full 26-mile marathon), huge cycle rides (John O’Groats to Land’s End, Rome to England, and trans-America).  These phenomenal feats raised around £2 million for a number of cancer and related charities.

Jane Tomlinson died in 2007, and Jane’s Appeal is now administered by her husband Mike, helped by their daughters Suzanne and Rebecca, and son Steven, and an army of helpers whose enthusiasm, hard work and devotion have to be seen to be believed; they aim now to bring the total raised to £5 million.  Click here for more information about the charity that Jane founded, and that Mike continues to foster.

There are so many clichés around now for fundraising that I’m sure you have heard them all, so we’re not going to repeat any here, but please sponsor us.  Well, it’s not really sponsorship we’re after – what we would really, really like you to do is just give some money to Jane’s Appeal.  The swim is just coincidental and is absolutely nothing compared to what Jane achieved in her lifetime and what Mike is now devoting his to.

Some of our previous fundraising events are listed, so please click here to see what we’ve been up to in the past, and for more details about this year’s event, click here.

You can sponsor us now (go on, you know you want to!) by going to www.justgiving.com/channel-relay or by sending a cheque made out to ‘Jane’s Appeal’ and sending it to Channel Relay, c/o J Hodgson & Sons Ltd, 28 Carre Street, Sleaford, Lincs NG34 7TR.

If you decide to send a cheque, please consider printing out a sponsorship form and enclosing it too.  As a UK tax payer, if you do this and tick the Gift Aid box, your gift is then worth a massive extra 28% to Jane’s Appeal.  This Gift Aid option is also available on the Justgiving.com website.  So, go on, please sponsor us.
